Oarweed

Oarweed, a brown algae from the Laminaria genus, is a versatile and sustainable resource found along Swedish coasts. It plays a role in eco-friendly industrial applications, including food production, biodegradable packaging, cosmetics, and biofuels. With its fast growth and rich nutrient profile, oarweed provides businesses with opportunities to develop their products while reducing environmental impact and supporting a more sustainable future.

What is Oarweed? Laminaria digitata

Oarweed, also known as "finger kelp" or by its Latin name Laminaria digitata, is a large brown alga characterized by long, ribbon-like fronds and a glossy dark brown color.

It is edible and can be consumed fresh, dried, or cooked, making it a versatile ingredient in both health and culinary products.

It has a strong holdfast that allows it to anchor itself to rocks and withstand powerful tides and waves. The fronds of oarweed can grow several meters long, making it one of the largest algae in its habitat. Its smooth, durable structure makes it highly valued for its nutritional and functional properties.

Industrial Applications of Oarweed

Oarweed offers a wide range of applications across various industries.

Food production

Oarweed is widely used in food products, particularly in soups, broths, and seaweed-based seasoning blends. It is rich in iodine and has high nutritional value, making it an important ingredient in many dishes.

Cosmetics and skincare

Oarweed contains antioxidants and minerals that make it valuable in skincare products. It is used in face masks, serums, and moisturizers, where it protects the skin against oxidative stress, hydrates, and contributes to skin health.

Bioplastics and biomaterials

Due to its high polysaccharide content, oarweed serves as an essential raw material for bioplastics and other biodegradable materials. It minimizes reliance on fossil-based plastics and supports the transition to sustainable packaging solutions.

Fertilizer and animal feed

Oarweed is used as a natural fertilizer due to its high mineral content, which enhances soil quality and plant growth.
It is also an effective supplement in livestock and poultry feed, providing essential nutrients for animal health.

Where does oarweed grow?

Oarweed thrives in cold, nutrient-rich waters and is commonly found in the North Atlantic and North Sea, particularly along the coasts of the United Kingdom, Iceland, Greenland, Scandinavia, and Ireland.
It grows at depths between 1 and 5 meters, attaching itself to rocks and other underwater surfaces to access sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis. Oarweed often forms dense underwater forests, playing a crucial role in marine ecosystems by providing habitat and shelter for various marine species.

When does oarweed grow?
Growth is fastest during spring and summer, with an average growth rate of approximately 1.3 cm per day during this period.

Ecological significance

Oarweed is not only a commercially valuable resource but also an ecologically sustainable solution.
Cultivating oarweed in controlled environments can help protect marine biodiversity and support sustainable aquaculture practices.
By absorbing carbon dioxide and excess nutrients from seawater, oarweed can help mitigate climate change and prevent ocean eutrophication.
However, it is crucial that cultivation is carefully monitored to prevent the spread of invasive species and ensure responsible and environmentally friendly production.

Nutrition

Oarweed is packed with essential nutrients and is a sought-after ingredient in functional foods, supplements, and health products.

Dulse is a valued ingredient in health products and beverages, but pregnant and breastfeeding women should be cautious with their intake due to the varying iodine levels.

Ulva Cultivation on large scale in the ocean

In 2022 Nordic SeaFarm completed the first EU funded Ulva project -  a project that demonstrated a huge success showcasing large scale Ulva farmning in the ocean.

The project was solely ran by Nordic SeaFarm.
